The endemic carnation of Piatra Craiului

The Carpathian Mountains are the largest intact ecosystem in Europe. More than one third of all wolves, bears, and lynx roam through the unspoiled forests of this spectacular mountain range. Here we offer you a 8 day riding trip, based on the tour elaborated during the co-operation with the now ended Carpathian Large Carnivore Project, which took place in Zarnesti. We have, however, also successfully carried out two-week trips and are happy to send you a longer programme on demand. Our horses are Arabians, Shagya-Arabians and local breeds, calm and used to the mountain trails.

Note: No bears can be seen during the period October-April.

1st Day: Arrival
After your arrival on the airport in Bucharest, transfer to Zărneşti.
2nd Day: Mt. Ciuma
After a delicious breakfast we will discover some facts researched by the Carpathian Large Carnivore Project, at the time of its research, the largest research and conservation project of its kind in Europe. A short walk/ride will take us to the project cabin right underneath the rock walls of Piatra Craiului. Further, on horse we follow a sheep trail up towards Mt. Ciuma. We will have an incredible view over Piatra Craiului, might find tracks of wolves, bears or other wildlife. Up on Mt. Ciuma we stop for lunch, face to face with the rock-walls of Piatra Craiului. On the way we visit a shepherd camp (possible only in June, July and August) and take a look at how the shepherds make cheese the old way and how their ferocious guarding dogs protect their flocks against wolves and bears. Our descent is on a tractor road along a narrow valley and, back in the main valley, the meadows invite for some long canters.
3rd Day: The gorge and the Kalibash-village
Today, we ride into the impressive, with over 100m high rocks, gorge of Zărneşti and further up to the village of Peştera. We have a good chance to see wall-creepers. From there on we continue towards the village of Peştera. This is a long day or riding and only in the evening we are back at the stable.
4th Day: Back to city: Dracula's Castle, Braşov, and Bears
After breakfast, we drive to Bran and visit the famous castle of Earl Dracula. The castle was built in 1377 as a castle of the customs on the trading route between Transylvania and Valahia, enlarged and restored a few times since then. The connections between this place and Vlad the Impeller Dracula is still under debate, but the castle is definitely worth a visit. From there, we continue to Braşov, a medieval town built by the Saxons, the German minority in Transylvania. Dinner in Braşov, and when already dark, we will have the chance to observe some bears living closely to the city.
5th & 6th Day : Overnight in the mountains
On a big round-trip, we experience the forests of Transylvania, home of the large carnivores. In the late afternoon of the first day, we arrive at a meadow up in the mountains, where we will stay over night in tents. Enjoy a rustic dinner cooked over the camp fire. The next morning we walk to a nearby patch of virgin forest and visit the gigantic fir, spruce, and beech trees. There is a good chance to spot an owl or a red deer. Spectacular view over the endless Carpathian forests at 1300-1600m altitude. In the late afternoon of day 6, we arrive back at the stable.
7th Day: Piatra Craiului and the hidden chapel
From the stable, we ride up over the meadows towards the rocks of Piatra Craiului. Up on a ridge, we stop for lunch break and visit a hidden stone chapel in the rocks nearby. After lunch break, we hike up to the edge of the impressive rock walls of Piatra Craiului, right up to timberline. The way leads through virgin forests, which have never heard the sound of a chain saw. Upon return to the horses, we continue our trip back down on the other side and have some long canters over the wide meadows of Barsa Valley. In the late afternoon, we shall have a farewell barbecue.
8th Day: Departure
Time to say good-bye! Transfer to the airport.
